That sales pitch is still the single most useful thing to know about gardening here. The free-draining western sand grows things quickly when it is fed and watered, and gives up water and nutrient just as quickly when it is not. The Bureau of Meteorology's coastal-plain gauge at Adelaide Airport averages only about 440 millimetres of rain a year, close to 100 millimetres under the Kent Town gauge on the other side of the city, so a summer here is carried by irrigation or it is not carried at all.
