Two to four applications a year suits most northern Adelaide lawns, with the two essential ones going down in early spring as the lawn comes out of winter dormancy and again in autumn to build root reserves before the cold. The other common cause is applying a high-nitrogen product to a lawn already under heat or water stress, which pushes growth the plant cannot support. For lawns on reactive clay, a slow-release granular with a balanced nutrient profile is the right base, but the fertiliser is genuinely the second question. The first is whether the clay will let anything through, which is where gypsum to open the structure, organic compost to add carbon and biology, and a wetting agent for hydrophobic summer soil all matter more than the brand of feed. Garden beds planted with Australian natives such as grevillea, banksia and westringia need a low-phosphorus native formulation, since standard fertiliser can kill them outright.
